Examples of an Informal Dress Code

The images featured are great examples of appropriate clothing for a casual work environment. Other dress codes exist that are more appropriate for formal, business casual, and smart casual workplaces.

A casual dress code means that employees are permitted to dress in comfortable, informal clothing. Although the employees' comfort is a priority, certain standards are required—clothing must be appropriate and still professional.

For example, clothing that you would wear to go exercising, lounging at home, going to the beach, or going to a dance club isn't suitable for the workplace. While keeping these standards in mind, employees can still look well-groomed and feel comfortable when following a casual dress code.

Both men and women have a variety of options in the workplace with a casual dress code. Jeans are a good option in an informal workplace. However, it is generally a good idea to avoid denim that is excessively ripped, tattered, or frayed.

Also, leave your low-rise, hip-hugging jeans, and pants at home, because modesty and professionalism are always important in the workplace no matter how casual the dress code. For men, a casual button-down shirt is always a great choice, and ties are not worn in a casual workplace.

Women have a vast number of top options, though it is important to avoid shirts that are low cut or too revealing. The coworkers in this image look great in nice jeans and casual, but appropriate tops.

People do judge your competence by how you present yourself in the workplace. Make sure your casual attire is appropriate for the image you wish to project at work.

This man is a good example of an appropriate outfit for an informal, casual dress workplace. His jeans are well-fitting and classic, without rips or tears. Also, his simple sweater is comfortable and casual, but still looks appropriate and is suitable for a casual work environment.

In a casual workplace, collarless options for men are suitable for business attire whereas they are a bit too informal for a workplace where the standard attire is business casual.

This group of employees is dressed in casual outfits that are appropriate in their workplace. Several of them pair a jacket with their jeans to reinforce their professional, yet casual, work appearance. The others wear casual shirts that are also paired with jeans.

Keep in mind that although a casual workplace dress code allows for informal clothing choices, you are expected to wear clothing that is in good condition, attractive, and appropriate for work. A casual blouse or jacket, like the ones in this photo, paired with jeans, is a staple outfit in a casual work environment.

These employees are dressed casually, with an informal vibe, but have added a dash of their own personal style. This is acceptable, as a casual workplace dress code does allow for some flexibility.

However, these employees are still dressed modestly and professionally. Their outfits are infused with a fashionable flair that expresses their personal styles while still looking appropriate and attractive for a casual workplace.

These coworkers represent your array of options in business attire when it comes to an informal, casual dress code. Although jeans are always a popular choice, casual slacks are another option. Women may wear skirts as well, as long as they are an appropriate length. As seen in the photo, all of these employees are dressed comfortably and casually, but still, they look professional.

In many ways, casual dress is up to the individual. Some women prefer skirts to jeans. Some men prefer to wear khakis instead of jeans. The individual employee's taste should dictate business attire in a casual work environment. When you introduce your dress code, these are some of the problems you will want to avoid.

They project a relaxed, comfortable professional image. Although their business attire would not be appropriate in a more formal work environment, they are suitably dressed for a casual dress code workplace.

These men and the woman are dressed well, in comfortable and relaxed clothing, but they still maintain a professional image. When it comes to a casual dress code, it is important to maintain these standards. Also, keep in mind that modesty in dress is not only important but so is modesty in accessories.

You need to avoid overbearing perfume and cologne. For women, makeup and hair should still be appropriate for the workplace, and if worn, the jewelry should not draw too much attention, but rather, complement your relaxed outfit.

These coworkers' outfits are not completely informal, however, they are still relaxed and casual. The man's button-down is professional and attractive, yet still casual since it is worn without a tie. Also, the women are wearing outfits that are casual, but still well put-together and attractive.

Although the degree of informality may vary from more casual to a little more dressy in some cases, it is important to remember that employee comfort is the main priority, as long as the employees still look professional and are dressed appropriately for the workplace.
